Before Kayla Hamilton’s name appeared in headlines, before strangers across the country came to know her story, she was simply Kayla.
She was a daughter, a sister, a friend and a young woman just beginning to discover who she wanted to become. She was kind and caring, funny and thoughtful, trusting and forgiving. She loved her family deeply, especially her mom and her little sister, Emma. And then there was Oreo, her beloved cat and faithful little companion who held a very special place in her heart.
Kayla was born on July 24, 2002, in Chesapeake, Virginia. She found happiness in the things that made her world brighter. She loved music, makeup and JoJo Siwa. She loved to laugh. She loved the people around her. There was an innocence and sincerity about Kayla that made her uniquely herself.
As she grew older, Kayla began doing what every parent hopes to see their child do: finding her own way.
She moved to Maryland, found a job at Sephora that she loved and began experiencing the independence of adulthood. There were plans to make, possibilities to explore and an entire life still waiting in front of her. At 20 years old, her story was really just beginning.
On July 24, 2022, Kayla celebrated her 20th birthday.
Three days later, her life was tragically taken. For the people who loved Kayla, the world changed forever.
There are details surrounding Kayla’s death that have been told many times. They have appeared in news reports, courtrooms and conversations across the country. Her story has traveled farther than her family ever could have imagined.
But somewhere among all those headlines, it is easy to lose sight of the most important part of the story.
Kayla lived.
She had a smile her family remembers. She had favorite songs and favorite things. She had people she loved and people who loved her. She had ordinary days, happy moments, inside jokes, dreams and plans for tomorrow. She was a big sister. She was a daughter whose absence would leave a space in her mother’s heart that no one else could ever fill.
How Kayla died is part of her story, but it should never become the definition of her life.
That belief is at the heart of the Kayla Hamilton Foundation.
In the days, months and years following Kayla’s death, her family faced the kind of grief no family should ever have to know. Nothing could bring Kayla home. Nothing could restore the birthdays, holidays, conversations and milestones that should have been ahead. But, love does not disappear simply because someone is gone.
Kayla’s family chose to carry that love forward. The pain of losing her slowly became connected to a new purpose: to help others, to create opportunities, to support communities and to make sure Kayla’s name would forever be associated with something larger than the tragedy that took her away.
That purpose became the Kayla Hamilton Foundation.
Today, Kayla’s memory lives through every act of kindness performed in her name, every person encouraged, every opportunity created and every life touched through the work of the Foundation. What began with one family’s unimaginable loss is becoming a way to bring hope to others.
There is no changing what happened on July 27, 2022.
But there is still so much that can happen because Kayla was here.
Her life can inspire generosity. Her memory can create opportunity. Her story can remind us to notice people, care for one another and never underestimate what a single act of compassion can mean to someone who needs it.
And perhaps that is the most important chapter still being written. When people hear the name Kayla Hamilton, her family hopes they will learn more than how her life ended.
They hope people will discover how she lived, how deeply she was loved and how one beautiful young life continues to touch others. Kayla was here. She was loved. She mattered. And, through the work done in her name, her story continues.
